Jamila Salimpour

Jamila Salimpour
American Tribal Style bellydance (A.T.S.)

Jamila Salimpour is the originator of tribal belly dance in America in the 60's. The shows she created with her troup Bal Anat wasfeaturing tribal dances from North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean. Then, Mashar Asher (Bal Anat member troup) created her own company. As a jewel designer, she focuses on costuming (large sarouel, turban) and stage presentation. She also starts to use fusion musics. Then Carolena Nericcio, who was her student since the age of 14, creates her own company Fat Chance Bellydance. Along the years, practising and performing, she creates  a format of moves and shapes, she creates the American Tribal Style. The concept : 1 leader on the front left of the stage is leading the troup improvising. Behind, the followers catch her "cues" to dance in synchronicity. Then, leading changes and one follower become a leader. Posture, regular rythms, costuming is also part of the concept. This dance is an ode to : collectiv ernergy and joy, tolerance, confidence, support. Ego is just out of this! Watch this interview of some Masters.
